Born is one of our favorite places in Barcelona. Walking in its narrow streets, without a particular direction, founding difrerent small squares, tons of stores with original items, is just a pleasure. Born district, also known as La Ribera, is a neighborhood with a huge history in Barcelona; it was founded on X century with arabian settlements, annd later, on XII century, when Barcelona became and importat port at the Mediterranian Sea, Born grew as a busy area full of mariners, nobles, and traders.

One of the most popular places,  yet spacial and mystic at Born is Santa Maria del Mar church, also known as “La Catedral del Mar” (the Sea Cathedral). The history of this church is amazing , as it was built in just 55 years, between 1329 to 1384, a record considering thta it was in the medieval era.

Santa Maria del Mar in one of the most representativegothic churches in Europe as it was built so quickly that it was influenced by any other architectural style. This temple was built only for residents in La Ribera area, who were the ones who financed the church, either with money or with work. The “bastaixos” (port workers) played a fundamental role in the construction of this church, as they carried on their backs all the   heavy pieces of rocks needed for the construction, from Montjuic quarry.

Just in front of Santa Maria del Mar, you will find one of our favorite bakeries in town, “Bubó” (Les Caputxes street, 10), with delicious and fancy creations. Bubó is proud to offer the best chocolate cake awarded in 2005, we have tried it and it is really good!. Beside, it offers a marvelous assort of cookies, cupcakes, chocolate, glasses od cava (catalonian champagne) and other items, for the delight of dessert lovers.

If you prefer going to musseums, Montcada street is the place to be. You will find one of the main musseums in Barcelona Picasso Musseum; also, across the street you will find Musseum Barbier Mueller of Pre- Columbian Art and the Disseny Hub of Barcelona.

If you like to hace a tapa (spanish appetizer) at Born, there are plenty of places in the area, specially nearby Paseo del Born; however,  we suggest to go to Golfo de Bizkaia, (Vidrería street, 12) small and informal basque restaurant, that serves tapas fresh and delicious, with kind service. At Paseo del Borne you’ll find many barsm so it is a good place for drinking cocktails while the night begins.

One of the most famous restaurants in the area is La Paradeta, Born, serving all kinds of fresh fish and seafood. It opens for dinner at 8:00 pm, and you have to wait in a long line to get into, but the wait time is worth it (we reccommend you to go early, at 7:30 pm, and wait until it opens). You choose the fish and seefod you want to eat, that is exhibited in a stand (seems like a fish market) and they cook it for you, it’s simply delicious. It is a very informal restaurant, so be prepare for almost nonexistent service. A tip to remember: they do not accept credit card.
