The bilateral relationship between Japan and Catalonia started around the 70′s and 80′s, when Japanese companies settled in Catalonia. The General Consulate of Japan in Barcelona opened back in 1987.

Now a days, the relationship between Japan and Catalonia is not only strong in economic terms, but also in social and cultural interests, as different aspects of the Japanese culture, traditional and folklore such as Manga, movies, and, of course, Japanese cuisine has taken hold.
