Has you booked your accommodation in Barcelona? Don’t wait too long, because Carnival in Barcelona is coming and the city will be full of tourists willing to enjoy and be part of this singular party filled with costumes, music and amusement.

The carnival in Barcelona is celebrated yearly the tuesday before Ash Wednesday, day that marks the begining of the  Lent.  The Carnival, or Carnestolendas party is last chance for the catholics of partying and enjoy the pleasures of life before the period of fasting and abstinence. Even as Carnival Tuesday is the most popular day, all the party lasts for 5 days, starting with the Gras Dijous (Maundy Thrusday) and ending on Ash Thrusday.

Carnival 2012 in Barcelona starts on Thrusday, February 16th with the Gras Dijous, a street party where people eat a lot (to compensate the abstinence in the period of Lent). It’s very typical to celebrate omelette contests to reward the most beautiful and tasty omelette.

The following Saturday (February 18) there are some Carnival Parades in the city, in Gràcia, Horta and Sants neighborhoods. These parades, known as Ruas de Carnaval, have floats and plenty of people wearing costumes that dance and have fun at the rhythm of the music. Its routes usually start at 8:00 pm and last 2 hours. These parades traditionally have a familiar atmosphere enjoyable either by children and adults.

The Carnival in Barcelona is relativily quiet, but if you want something more animated, you can go to the Carnival in Sitges 2012, where you’ll find a wonderful party.  If you want to combine the hustle of the Carnival with something quiter, we suggest you to rent Barcelona holiday apartments.

Carnival 2012 in Barcelona will end on Tuesday Febrary 22, with the Burial of the Sardine, a Carival parade that becomes a funeral to bury the King of Carnival (represented by a Sardine) and this is the closure for the Carnival in Barcelona until next year.
