In the coming month of April, Easter Week 2011 will be celebrated. If you do not have plans for this holiday, why don’t you just make a trip to Barcelona for Easter Week? Without any doubts, if you decide to do so, the city will not disappoint you. There are plenty of things to do, from traditional and religious activities, to other types of activities that have nothing to do with religion.

If you decide to visit the city at Easter, we suggest you stay in apartaments in Barcelona.

In a previous post we had talked about  activities for Easter Weel 2011 in Barcelona; we suggest you to visit Barcelona’s amazing churches, such as:

  • La Sagrada Familia
  • Expiatory church of the Sacred Heart (Templo Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón) at Tibidabo mountain
  • Santa María del Mar.
  • The Cathedral of Barcelona

Also, during the Holy Week there are 3 traditional processions held in Barcelona:

  • Palm Sunday Procession, at Cathedral of Barcelona surroundings, when performing the traditional blessing of palms, on April 17th.
  • Procession of  Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder y de María Santísima de la Esperanza Macarena, which  takes place on Good Friday, leaving from El Raval neighborhood and passing by points in the Gothic Quarter
  • Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, over the Gothic Quarter, starting at Sant Jaume Church, on Good Friday April 24th.

If religious activities are not appealing  to you, don’t worry, there are many other things to do in Barcelona during Easter Week:

  • You can check some of the free activities in Barcelona, we recommend you visit the social and cultural center CaixaForum, which always has interesting exhibitions, or make a skating path through the city.
  • You can take advantage that Holy Thursday is not a public holiday in Catalonia, to go shopping in Barcelona. You can find a list of major retailers in our guide: what to do in Barcelona?
  • You can take a day trip from Barcelona to Montserrat to visit the Monastery of Our Lady of Montserrat and marvel at the beautiful views and modernist sculptures.
  • You can take walks, and make a special emphasis in the windows of the bakeries, where you will see displayed the very traditional and spectacular “Monas de Pascua”, which are typical cakes that are made for Easter Week, wonderfully decorated.
  • Since Easter Week is celebrated on the second half of April, in the middle of spring, it is always advisable to take a stroll through the parks of the city, especially through the Parc Guell and Laberinto de Horta, which look at its best in this station.
