If you plan to come to Barcelona in the summer, you can enjoy the delicious Mediterranean climate, with its beaches, fine dining, cultural activities and everything else that the second city of Spain has to offer.

Barcelona has a coastline of about 5 km and the beaches are immediately situated to the city limits. The beaches can be reached easily using public transport. The closer to the center of town, how more crowded the beaches are. Certainly at San Sebastia and Barceloneta is a little push on beautiful days. But remember, this certainly has its charm and really is part of the city. Ahead you can find the beaches Bogatell, Mar Bella up to Llevant where the atmosphere is very different. Every beach- and water-sports lover will be attracted. Nude beaches, sports facilities and various water sports are available in Barcelona. Perfect to stay in a Barcelona accommodtion to enjoy all of these good things.

The coast is very wild and wildly through the many rock formations that sometimes runs into the sea, which are foothills of the Pyrenees. Along the 200 km long, rocky coast there are many beautiful bays.

Wide sandy beaches are rare. Actually, the only two beaches are the ones in the vast Gulf of Roses and in the Gulf of Pals. But rather to the small bays surrounded by pine trees, the area derives its appearance. The beaches consist mostly of coarse sand, fine gravel or pebbles. The water is often extremely bright, which, by the way, is no guarantee for “pure” water.

The Costa Brava stretches from Blanes direction North up to the French border. The most famous resorts in the region are:

  • Tossa de Mar: A town with a charm. The old part is very well preserved and has an impressive castle on the seashore. The scenery is beautiful and has many beaches.
  • Begur: It has some of the most beautiful beaches of the Costa Brava, such as Sa Riera, Aiguafreda, Sa Tuna, Playa Fonda, Fornells and Aiguablava.
  • Cadaqués: One of the most remote destinations on the Costa Brava, on the border with France, is one of the most beautiful villages of Spain. A coastal town with white houses, fisherman-style, where famous artists lived such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí (you can visit the home of Salvador Dalí).
  • Palafrugell: It has beautiful beaches and the town is well equipped for tourism.
  • Lloret de Mar: One of the towns closest to Barcelona and offers beaches and many options for nightly entertainment. Keep in mind that this is a pretty crowded tourist destination and is frequently visited by young people, which is not the place you’re looking for tranquility and relaxation.

How to get to the Costa Brava from Barcelona

As mentioned, it is advisable spending a day on the Costa Brava and to go to one of these resorts to feel the total different atmosphere, see the pretty views and feel like being somewhere else. The best way to travel to one of these places is to take a direct bus or by renting a car.

  • Taking the RENFE local train in Barcelona (you can take the train stations Sants or Plaça Catalanya) to Blanes station, marking the beginning of the Costa Brava.
  • The direct buses to travel from station Nord (Estacion del Nord) which is situated near Arc de Triomf station (L1 red line). Buses run several times a day to various locations in the Costa Brava, as Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Platja d’Aro, Palafrugell, Roses, Cadaques and many more destinations. The best thing you can do is to leave early in the morning and return early evening. Tickets can be purchased online at www.sarfa.com and are not so expensive.
  • You can rent a car in Barcelona and drive to the Costa Brava, as the road is not long, is well marked and the roads and highways are in excellent condition.

I think the best option is Calella de Palafrugell, or other small fishing villages. The beaches and coves are amazing!
