Fast cars, race strategies, aerodynamic alignments, engine sounds, tire changes, checkered flag, overtakings … All these images come to the minds of those who enjoy car races, and especially the most popular competition, which is Formula 1.

The sixth race on the F1 calendar, known as Gran Premio de España (Grand Prix of Spain) will be held from 20 to 22 May 2011, at the Circuit de Catalunya, which is located at Montmelo, just 20 kilometers away from Barcelona. In the latest edition of this race the winner was Australian Mark Webber, on behalf of Red Bull-Renault team.

One of the special things in F1 2011 season is that we’ll have the chance to watch 5 world champions piloting their cars in different teams, such as:

  • Sebastian Vettel, champion, now in Red Bull.
  • Jenson Button, champion 2009, now in McLaren.
  • Lewis Hamilton, 2008 champion, now McLaren
  • Fernando Alonso, 2005 and 2006 champion, now at Ferrari.
  • Michael Schumacher, 7 times F1 champion, currently in Mercedes GP.

Activities for Gran Premio de España 2011

  • Friday May 20 – practices.
  • Saturday May 21 – practice qualified or “pole position”
  • Sunday May 22 –Race.

Prices for Gran Premio de Españ tickets vary depending on the location chosen, and go from 140 to 450 euros for the three-day event. If you make a purchase in advance, you can get a discount on ticket prices.

About Circuit de Catalunya:

The Circuit de Catalunya has a length of 4.655 kilometers. For F1 races pilots should finish 66 laps, for a total distance of 307.104 kilometers. Circuit de Catalunya was opened in 1991 and has a capacity of 131,000 spectators. As a highlight of the circuit, it has a very long straight of 1.3 kilometers, in which the cars can reach very high speeds over 300 mph, and it has sharp turns as well. The record for the fastest lap on this circuit was reached by Kimi Raikkonen in 2008, with 1 minute 20 seconds and 67 hundredths.

How to get to Montmelo from Barcelona by train:

One of the most recommended to go to Mntmelo from Barcelona is by train. You can take Line 2 of the “cercanías” train, at stations Sants, Passeig de Gracia or Clot, then you will get off at Montmelo station. Although the train company puts additional trains in service during race days, it is expected that trains will be quite full, but it is not such a problem, considering thar the journey takes only about 25 minutes.

How to get to Montmelo from Barcelona, by bus:

For those attending to Gran Prix of Spain, there’s also the option of going by bus. The bus company Sagalés offers a special service for the days of the race.
