Park Guell is a large garden next to the sea-facing side of mount El Carmel, not far from mount Tibidabo. It was designed by Antoni Gaudi, who is considered the principal representative of modernism in Catalonia.

This park is an artistic reflection of the fullness of Gaudi in his natural stage (first decade of the twentieth century); it shows him implementing a number of new structural solutions, originated in his deep analysis of the formal geometry. Gaudi displayed his architectural genius in his work, building on those structural solutions that culminate in La Sagrada Familia.

The park was designed jointly by Gaudi and Guell, and is imbued with a strong symbolism. In their common elements, many of the ideals shared by patron and architect, both political and religious, are represented, -one example is the long staircase that represents all the provinces of the Catalan region. They also emphasized the mythological elements. It seems both were inspired by the Temple of Apollo at Delphi for their design of the park.

Park Guell was originally created as a housing development, though only two houses were built, Muntaner de Dalt, (also known as Larrard House) where Guell lived for some time, and which is now a college, and Coll i Pujol, where Gaudi resided between 1906 and 1926, and which is now the Gaudi House Museum, on the Montaña Pelada (Bare Mountain). It holds many important works of art by Gaudi, though it was not designed by him.

Admission to Palau Guell, which is located at number 3 of Calle Nou de la Rambla (one of the most luxurious neighborhoods in Barcelona), lets you go through the whole grounds as well as the palace and the museum, except for parts that are in restoration and maintenance.

Anecdotally, in 1944 an American millionaire wanted to buy the Palau and take it to his country, stone by stone. Fortunately, it was ultimately acquired by the Province of Barcelona.

If you look forward to visiting Barcelona and to taking a walk within the Park Guell, consider Barcelona apartments close to La Rambla for easier access.
