One of the most interesting events in Barcelona on April 2012 is the International Festival of Movie Shorts in Barcelona,  known as Festival Mecal. This movie short festival in Barcelona is celebrated annually since 1999. For this edition of  Mecal Barcelona the organizers have received more than 4,500 shorts (30% more than last year).

Mecal Barcelona 2012: The best movie shorts in the city

Mecal 2012 in Barcelona will take place from March 13th to April 29th.  As usual, there will be different locations for presenting the shorts; so if you plan to come to the city for this event, we suggest you to look for accommodation in Barcelona, as it could be apartments at Las Ramblas or Gothic Quarter, so you can combine the chance of enjoying a tourist visit to Barcelona and watching the shorts in Mecal.  

Mecal 2012 in Barcelona  will have 3 cathegories: International (to award the best of 49 international fiction and animation shorts); Obliqua (to award the riskier of 47 shorts) and Documental (to award the best of 15 documentary shorts, and the winner is elected by the public).

Not only the films that are elegible for awards are going to be proyected during the celebration of Mecal Barcelona, but also more than 300 other shorts from more than 35 countries.  It’s remarkable the presence of German shorts, as Germany is the special guest for this edition, as includes productions of Rainer Werner Flassbinder and Fatih Akin, as well of  a Special of Animation and the best shorts of the Interfil Berlin Festival.

Among the parallel cathegories in the festival you will find:  First Ever (vintage style shorts), Freaky, nerd and other human rarities, Heavy Metal, End of the World and Anti-heros.  Beside, included on the  Mecal 2012 program you’ll find some sessions of other subjects that have been a success in previous editions, such as: Special Sex, Special Terror and Womart (female oriented shorts).

Mecal 2012 is a festival for all tastes and ages. For that reason, they include in they program Videoclips, Creative Advertising Special and Children Special. For children from 6 to 12 years old, there’s going to be a workshop for learning how to make shorts. Tickets can be purchased through ticketea, and the ticket for the whole festival price is 18 €.
