Have you ever wondered qhy many people say you will not find skyscrapers in the architecture of Barcelona? The main reason is that there is a discrepancy in the definition of skyscrapers. For some, the definition of skyscraper is any building over 100 meters high, for others it is over 500 feet (152.5 meters). Under these considerations the old city would have only 14 buildings taller than 100 meters and 2 to over 150.

However, since the main reason that very tall buildings are constructed is more related to an attractive architecture and advertising reasons than to technical advantages, economic reasons or land use, currently skyscrapers are considered buildings that significantly exceed the construction height of other elements around them and therefore stand out on the skyline of a city.

So, of course there are skyscrapers in Barcelona! Just look up while strolling down the boulevards and meet the Columbus Building and its 110 meters high.

Now if you just want to tour in Barcelona visiting the tallest buildings in the city, here we mention three:

Hotel Arts. Designed by architect Bruce Graham, was built in 1992 for the Olympic Games, just at the entrance of the port. Its height of 154 meters has 44 floors. It is both a luxury hotel and an apartment building (the last 9 floors are intended to duplex apartments). You’ll also find one of the best spas in Barcelona and the famous restaurant Arola.

Torre Mapfre. One might think that this building of 154 m also situated in the Olympic Port is a twin building to the Hotel Arts skyscraper, but it is not so. Although they were built at the same time, the design is totally different. This building has 40 floors for offices, a shopping center on the ground floor and a helipad on the roof.

Torre Agbar. His impressive bullet-shaped design draws attention quickly. It was built in 2005 and it’s 145 m high. It is located next to Plaza de las Glorias (Av. Diagonal). Each evening it is illuminated for a few hours, giving it a spectacular look.
