From June 16 until June 18 one of Europe’s most famous a biggest music festival is scheduled, the International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art, Sonar 2011. The event is a perfect combination of contemporary music and so it brings together many artists. The description on the website reads: “Three days and three nights in touch with the most up-to-date developments and featuring the most relevant national and international artists.” The event is attended by thousands from all over Europe, which travel to Barcelona to attend to this yearly event. Annually there are around 80.000 visitors to the festival.

The Sonar festival takes place at various locations throughout the city. Unlike most other music festivals, this festival will not take place in an open field. Instead, just in middle of the city and so camping is not part of this. You can book an apartment in Barcelona to cover your visit to the Sonar festival.

The event is divided into Sonar by day and Sonar by night part (tickets are sold separately). Sónar By Day takes place in the Center of Contemporary Culture (CCCB) (closest metro stations: Catalunya (red line L1 and green line L3), Liceu (green line L3) and station Universitat (red line L1 and purple line L2) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) both in the center of Barcelona. The night section covers some distance from the center position, namely Gran Via de la Fira de Barcelona. In addition, there are activities for CosmoCaixa (Ferrocarriles de la generalitat de Catalunya, train station avinguda del Tibdabo) and two other concerts in special venues, the inaugural concert at L’Auditori de Barcelona and the closing concert at the Teatre Grec. The opening in L´Auditori will take place on Thursday the 16th of June and there will be a concert by Steve Reich, BCN216 and Synergy Vocals. Friday and Saturday has a full program and present a variety of artists.  The closing concert at Teatre Grec  will present concerts from Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto.

If you plan on going, try to buy your tickets in advance. You will only get a discount with the pre sale. If you are looking for accommodation for Sonar, you can best decide in what area you want to stay  and do realize Barcelona has an excellent public transport system (including night buses and night trains) and taxis are not quite expensive.
