The tradition of tapas (appetizers) before meals, with a glass of wine, or virtually at any time of day or night is widespread throughout the Iberian Peninsula, and Barcelona is one of the best places to have tapas. From the top restaurants in Barcelona to the simple tavernas, you can taste before enjoying a delicious meal, or have some tapas when waiting at the bar. While you enjoy the tapas, side by side with the people around you, make contact with them and learn more about the idiosyncrasy of the locals.

Accompanied with wine or beer, some of the most typical tapas of Barcelona are bread with tomatoes, garlic, salt and olive oil called pa amb tomaquet in Catalan, patatas bravas (spicy potatoes) and, being at the seaside, you cannot miss seafood or fish tapas.

At the best Barcelona restaurants, like Cuines Santa Caterina, which offers several types of food, from Asian to vegetarian, you can spend some time at the bar, where you can smoke and try a variety of delicious tapas before your fancy dinner.

If you just want to go for tapas and drinks, there are many circuits you can do, hopping from one restaurant to another until you have tasted all the tapas restaurants in Barcelona. You can start, for example, at the Bar Mundial, with its generous portions, or the Bodegueta, with its exquisite anchovies. You could try the cod fish or croquetas (chicken or fish nuggets) in La Taverna or go into the Gothic Quarter to find the bar El Tropezón, which is small and rustic.

La Coctelería 41o. also offers sweet and ambrosial tapas, such as profiterole with blackcurrant, lime and coconut marshmallows or spiced pineapple dices.
