Are you coming to Madrid in August? If you do, we advice you to rent apartments by days in La Latina, so that you will be near from the place where the most traditional festival of the city will take place. Indeed, in August, we have the Paloma Festival in Madrid which is a traditional festival which includes the main festival of the Paloma Virgin but also the festivals of San Cayetano and San Lorenzo.

The Paloma Festival is celebrated every year since the middle of the 19th Century and since then, it became one of the most popular in Madrid. Currently, the festival runs from the first day of July and end on the 15th of August (a day officially dedicated to the Virgin of Paloma). And because the other two festivals of San Cayetano (7th of August) and San Lorenzo (10th of August) are very close, since 1980, they decided to celebrate the event during 15 days with a series of traditional festivities, sport activities, concerts, workshops for children and contests in the Rastro and Lavapiés neighborhoods.

The Paloma festival in Madrid always starts with the reading of the festival´s opening speech. Then, different activities are organized for the inhabitants of the neighborhoods and everyone who is attending the activities can have free lemonade. On the days that we celebrate San Cayetano and San Lorenzo, there are masses on the morning, and then they organize a little walk through the neighboring streets and the day end with a musical event.

The main celebration of the Paloma Festivities in Madrid starts with a floral offer to the Paloma Virgin and then, there is a solemn mass and about 8 p.m. the procession starts. One interesting thing is that it is the fire fighters of the Town Council of Madrid that are in charge of putting down the image of the Paloma Virgin from her altar because the Paloma Virgin is their patron saint. To end the day, there will be a musical festival at the Plaza de la Paja.
