When you think about travelling to Madrid, you need to think about the Puerta de Alcalá (Alcalá´s door). Its historical significance and its strategic situation in the heart of the city make of it an ideal place to find an accommodation in Madrid. Nowadays, it is one of the main monuments to see in Madrid even if its aspect has changed through the years and even if it has not always been located in the same place.

As Muslims occupied Madrid, it was a fortified city that counted with 3 doors. One of them was the Puerta de Santa María located on the way to Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajara. Then, with the enlargement of the city, the wall and the door have been relocated and this door became known as The Puerta de Guadalajara. In 1582, this door disappeared because of a fire and it is only in 1625 that, as they were extending the wall to include the Retiro Park, a new door has been built on the Alcalá Street, a door named Puerta de Alcalá in Madrid.

Then, Charles III of Spain decided that the city needed more than a door and he asked Francesco Sabatini (the Italian architect who conclude the construction of the Royal Palace) to design a Triumphal Arc. Among those designs, Charles III of Spain decided to make a fusion; that is why the Puerta de Alcalá presents two different sides. In 1869, the wall was demolished and the Plaza de la Independencia was built. Today, this Plaza de la Independencia surrounds the Alcalá´ door and became one of the main touristic monuments in Madrid.

On this place, we can find the Harina Bakery (Plaza de la Independencia 10, tel: 0034.91.522.87.85) which provides delightful breads and confectionery but also an amazing view of the area. Their speciality is the bread of masa madre (made with tomatoes and olives) but they also offer complete breakfast for only 10€.
